PHOENIX, AZ – Steve Gitter inadvertently made eye contact with the cheerful polo-shirted employee as he turned the corner and quickly paid for his blunder as the 80,000 point offer quickly singsonged across the terminal in his direction. Gitter was trapped and quickly lied saying he already had the card and then darted in the bathroom to fake pee.

Gitter, of course, was lying. He most definitely did not have that Southwest Airlines credit card and had no plans to sign up for it. In fact, he didn’t even like the fact he was flying Southwest and was somewhat embarrassed by the fact this week’s business trip required a Southwest Airlines leg.

However, having made the mistake of making eye contact with the cheerful man hocking credit cards from the kiosk in the Phoenix airport he had felt trapped – unsure what to do. So he lied.

As he passed by the crestfallen associate who was just happy someone had seen him, he threw in a quick thumbs up too to help sell the lie. It seemed to work as the man’s shoulders fell and he turned back towards his kiosk and the shame-ridden look of his female coworker.
