DALLAS, TX – In a bid to fill desperately needed seats at empty conference room tables, one airline is getting creative by asking baggage handlers to double as executives.
The post-pandemic travel surge combined with a tight labor market means many airlines find themselves in desperate need of more airline executives. With far too many conference calls and long-range planning meetings than can be served by the current crop of execs, one airline is getting creative.
American Airlines has started asking baggage handlers to take an extra shift in the boardroom. Baggage handlers will cover 2 to 3 conference calls per day by tacking on an extra 3 hours to their day. They will join conference calls from available boardrooms and conference rooms at the airports they are assigned to and be asked to do things like “nod in an understanding fashion” during presentations from senior leaders, offer to play devil’s advocate from time to time, and suggest ways to change the paradigm of the company so that we can “move the ball forward” on airline initiatives.
Handlers will be given a suit jacket to wear over their employee uniform and be allowed to sample the coffee and snacks reserved for airline executives. Handlers will be given a small stipend of roughly $37 dollars for their time as long as they also agree to never implement an employee based net promoter system like competitor United Airlines has recently done.
